Mohammed Shami started his cricket training under Badruddin Siddique in Moradabad. Despite missing out on selection for the Uttar Pradesh Under-19 team, he moved to Kolkata on his coach’s advice to increase his chances of selection​. Shami played for the Dalhousie Athletic Club and later joined Town Club and Mohun Bagan Cricket Club in Kolkata.
